Galacticaa gets an upgrade

December 29, 2005 at 10:23 am | Site News

In advance of next week’s new Galactica episode, we’ve made a number of improvements to Galacticaa:

• Massively reworked our tags implementation — the main tag cloud now shows all available tags, the mini tag cloud in the sidebar has more tags and a new design, the mini tag cloud is also higher up in the sidebar so it’s easier to see, and Technorati tag links now include a Technorati logo. Also — tags like ‘bsg’ and ‘galactica’ (which are great for search engines, but not useful when browsing this site) are now hidden from view.

• Unified the appearance of the index, category, archive, and search results pages. (Previously, there were slight layout differences between all of these pages.)

• Added a search box to the search results page so it’s easier to refine search queries

• Improved the ‘Who’s Online?’ counter script — it should now both a list of logged-in users and a count of all guests

• Removed the Google Adsense banners. (For now, the income wasn’t worth the trouble… they may return in the future.)

• Reduced the number of del.icio.us links to five. (Larger numbers of links tend to contain duplicates, and a larger list refreshes less often for repeat visitors.)

• Reorganized the Galactica links in the sidebar. (Removed dead links, renamed link groups, and renamed a few links so that they’re more accurate.)

• Tweaked the site footer a little bit

(Don’t worry, though. We didn’t network our computers.)

Pics and recap from Richard Hatch cruise

December 27, 2005 at 12:24 pm | Battlestar News, Cast & Crew

The Unofficial Battlestar Blog has posted a nice recap of the recent Richard Hatch Grand Mayan Adventure Cruise.

Remember that Richard Hatch vacation cruise I posted about a while back? Well, Jean Williams decided to give herself an early Christmas present and attend. She was nice enough to email me some photos and I recap which I am posting below on her behalf. Enjoy!

SciFi plans 2nd BSG marathon for January 5

December 27, 2005 at 10:12 am | Battlestar News

Just one week after airing its last marathon of Season 2 episodes (to celebrate the release of Battlestar Galactica on DVD), the SciFi Channel is at it again.

The SciFi wire schedule shows another near-complete marathon showing of existing Season 2 episodes planned for January 5, just one day before the next new episode from Season 2 airs.

BSG Marathon on SciFi

During last week’s marathon, SciFi left out ‘Scattered’ and ‘Valley of Darkness’. This time, those episodes are in, but they’re not running ‘Final Cut’.

Also new this time… the ‘SciFi Inside: Battlestar Galactica’ special will air at the conclusion of the marathon.

Widget update

The Galacticaa Dashboard Widget has been updated with information for the 2nd half of Season 2, starting with “Resurrection Ship, Part One”.

(Apologies to those who saw a “blank” widget over the weekend.)

Dark Thoughts adds more “Resurrection Ship” images

December 26, 2005 at 9:49 am | Battlestar News, Spoilers

With less than two weeks to go until the next episode of Battlestar Galactica airs, Dark Thoughts has posted another batch of “Resurrection Ship” photos to its image library.

Most of the shots aren’t revealing and offer logical plot extensions from “Pegasus”, the last pre-hiatus episode. But that’s not the case for three of the shots, so now it’s time for us to go into spoiler mode…

SPOILERS start

• Starbuck and Apollo holding hands

• Gina (aka Number Six) pointing a gun at Admiral Cain

• And this last one is pretty amazing… Adama and President Roslin kissing!

Let the speculation begin!

SPOILERS end

‘Scifi Inside’ special hits iTunes

December 23, 2005 at 5:50 pm | Battlestar News

SciFi Inside

Apple is now offering free downloads of the upcoming ‘SciFi Inside’ special on Battlestar Galactica.

The half-hour show, which features new interviews with the Galactica cast and crew, is scheduled to air in January, just before the 2nd half of Season 2 begins.

There are a few shots of future scenes at the very end, but otherwise it’s pretty standard stuff. But, if you can’t wait for Season 2 to start, it’s a fun half-hour to watch. (I loved how Grace Park prevented herself from revealing any spoilers.)

[Thanks to Chris Radcliff and Dave Bills for the heads up.]

BSG Season 2 DVD hits stores!

December 20, 2005 at 10:55 am | Merchandise

Season 2 DVD

With just a few days left to go before Christmas, Universal has released the first half of Season 2 on DVD.

The disc contains the following features:

• 3 discs
• 10 episodes
• 440 minutes
• Deleted scenes
• Episode commentaries (from the podcasts)
• Sneak peek at the 2nd half of Season 2
• Dolby Digital 5.1 sound
• Widescreen anamorphic presentation

Notably, though, the DVD does not contain the extended, 90-minute version of the “Pegasus” episode where Galactica meets up with another Battlestar which survived the Cylon attack. Current plans call for this episode to be included in the DVD for the 2nd half of DVD… which will probably appear sometime this summer.

Lastly, I love the fact that Amazon already has 67 reviews for this DVD. That’s a passionate fanbase for you!

UPDATE: During today’s marathon, the SciFi channel is promoting the new DVD with commercials that mention a special DVD-only website. Not much new there, but there’s a high quality version of the DVD trailer that appeared on the web last week.

Ron Moore renews deal with NBC Universal

December 19, 2005 at 9:01 am | Battlestar News, Cast & Crew

Variety is reporting that Ron Moore has renewed his deal with NBC Universal Television. Since I don’t have a subscription to Variety, the details are a bit lacking, but it appears the deal includes plans for Moore to develop additional sci-fi-themed series for NBC Universal. Hopefully, such work will be done in a way that doesn’t distract from Galactica…

“Battlestar Galactica” exec producer Ronald D. Moore has inked a rich overall pact with NBC Universal Television Studio, reupping for another two years. Deal calls for Moore, who exec produced the first season of HBO’s “Carnivale” before joining “Battlestar,” to create and develop series, with an emphasis on sci-fi-themed projects…

(If anyone does have a Variety sub, feel free to share the full text of the article.)
