Galacticaa goes Yahoo

Galacticaa Yahoo Widget

To celebrate Friday’s new Galactica episode, we’ve added a Yahoo Widget version of our popular Galacticaa Dashboard widget.

The new widget is cross-platform, so it will work on both Windows and Macintosh computers that are running Yahoo Widgets 3.0 and later. (Mac users can use either the Yahoo Widget or our original Dashboard widget. They’re identical.)

UPDATE: Thanks to everyone who’s downloaded the widget. We’ve had almost 1000 downloads since the new widget was released!

Galacticaa gets an upgrade

December 29, 2005 at 10:23 am | Site News

In advance of next week’s new Galactica episode, we’ve made a number of improvements to Galacticaa:

• Massively reworked our tags implementation — the main tag cloud now shows all available tags, the mini tag cloud in the sidebar has more tags and a new design, the mini tag cloud is also higher up in the sidebar so it’s easier to see, and Technorati tag links now include a Technorati logo. Also — tags like ‘bsg’ and ‘galactica’ (which are great for search engines, but not useful when browsing this site) are now hidden from view.

• Unified the appearance of the index, category, archive, and search results pages. (Previously, there were slight layout differences between all of these pages.)

• Added a search box to the search results page so it’s easier to refine search queries

• Improved the ‘Who’s Online?’ counter script — it should now both a list of logged-in users and a count of all guests

• Removed the Google Adsense banners. (For now, the income wasn’t worth the trouble… they may return in the future.)

• Reduced the number of del.icio.us links to five. (Larger numbers of links tend to contain duplicates, and a larger list refreshes less often for repeat visitors.)

• Reorganized the Galactica links in the sidebar. (Removed dead links, renamed link groups, and renamed a few links so that they’re more accurate.)

• Tweaked the site footer a little bit

(Don’t worry, though. We didn’t network our computers.)

Apologies for the hiatus

Eventful

For the past few weeks, I’ve been working insanely hard on releasing the newest version of Eventful, so updates to Galacticaa have been sparse.

The funny thing is that the code name for the new Eventful website was actually “Apollo”. Primarily, the code name was an allusion to two things: the Apollo moon landings and the Arrow of Apollo from BSG.

So this probably makes Eventful one of the first software products to have a BSG-inspired name!

We’ve just released a minor update to our Galacticaa Dashboard widget.

  • Fixed an issue where the countdown clock failed to load when the widget is first installed
  • Fixed an issue where the custom airtime wasn’t being saved properly

If you’ve already got the widget installed, you’ll see an upgrade the message the next time you open Dashboard. If not, now’s your chance to download!

Galacticaa Widget 2.0

The new version of the Galacticaa Dashboard widget is now available!

Galacticaa 2.0

We originally planned to release this widget at the very start of Season 2, but it took a bit longer to develop than we had expected. But those of you who downloaded our original Season 2 Countdown widget should be very pleased.

Here’s a quick list of features:

  • Get the scoop on the next episode of Battlestar Galactica!
  • Get episode name, summary, photo, and airdate for each new episode
  • Display time remaining until the next episode of Galactica starts (optional)
  • Customize episode start time to match your preferred viewing time
  • Find out if the next episode is new or a repeat
  • Relish in the BSG-inspired interface, including cut corners!
  • …and a few surprises!

Special thanks to Ted O’Connor, Chris Radcliff, Danny Markham, and David Bills for extensively beta-testing this widget.

Sorry for the radio silence.

We’ve been working on our new Dashboard widget like mad. Now that it’s done, the site will again be posting daily updates on the world of Battlestar Galactica. (And check back tomorrow to download the new widget.)

So say we all!

Battlestar Galactica — The Widget!

BSG Season 2 widget

We released our new Battlestar Galactica widget this morning.

The widget displays the number of days, hours, minutes, and seconds until the start of Season 2. (You were probably counting in your head anyway, right?)

For those who aren’t familiar with widgets, they’re a very cool feature that Apple introduced in Mac OS X Tiger (the latest version of the Macintosh operating system).

As Apple puts it: “Dashboard is home to widgets: mini-applications that let you perform common tasks and provide you with fast access to information. With a single click, Dashboard appears, complete with widgets that bring you a world of information — real-time weather, stock tickers, flight information and more — instantly. Dashboard disappears just as easily, so you can get back to what you were doing.”

So far, the response has been tremendous. We’ve had over 500 widget downloads in less than 24 hours. If you haven’t downloaded the Galacticaa widget yet, please check it out.

(To install, just click on the widget icon at the top of the sidebar on the right and follow the instructions.)

Welcome to Galacticaa

Ok, for starters, the new Battlestar Galactica series kicks ass.

State-of-the-art visual effects, documentary-style camera work, brilliant casting, absolutely first-class writing, and a bone-chilling premise. BSG is clearly some of the best science fiction — increasingly, I’m thinking it actually is the best — to ever grace the small screen.

One has to wonder… “what would Star Trek have been like if Paramount and Rick Berman had let Ron Moore take the gloves off?”

So, since we are all very lucky bastards to be watching this series, I’ve created this blog as a place for BSG fans to salivate over new episodes, awash ourselves in fandom, and generally enjoy all things Galactica.

May the “Frak” be with you…
