Original Galactica models

Just in time for Christmas, ‘Profiles in History’ is putting two original Battlestar Galactica models — one viper, one cylon raider — up for auction on eBay.

These are the original miniatures created by effects legend John Dykstra and Apogee Effects to film several of the visual effects sequences in the original Galactica television show. If you’re a fan of the original show or visual effects in general, it’s definitely cool stuff. (Though, with bidding expected to start at $50,000, few fans will have a chance to participate.)

Here are the full details from the auction page:

From the classic science-fiction series of the late 1970s, we are pleased to present two original screen-used filming miniatures of the main fighter ships, each representing the apex of technology as realized by the Colonials and their arch-enemies, the Cylons. Both of these filming miniatures were created by John Dykstra and the crew of Apogee Effects.

The first is a Colonial Viper, which can be screen-identified as Starbuck’s Viper in the episode ‘The Young Lords’. It is during this episode that Starbuck is fired upon by the Cylons, and his Viper struck underneath causing him to crash-land on the Cylon-controlled world of Attila. While still in flight, Boomer flies underneath to inspect the damage and discovers that Starbuck’s ‘Anti-Burn Baffles’ are gone! This filming miniature is constructed of self-skinning foam, and measures 15 1/2 in. in length with studio-weathering and burn damage on the underside, which has been impregnated with metal shavings for realism. The figure in the cockpit represents Starbuck. This is one of only six miniature Vipers ever created, and prior to the damage incurred during this episode (during its pristine state), it was filmed for stock footage used throughout the series run. Of the six original Viper miniatures, this is the only one that can be specifically identified on-screen, due to the damage.

The companion piece offered here is an original Cylon Raider filming miniature, one of only four created for the series. Like the Viper, it is made of self-skinning foam, and measures 17 in. diameter at its widest point. The miniature features airbrushed detailing, such as black/grey shading on the upper surfaces to resemble carbon or other exhaust residue from flight, and two green pentagram symbols on the outer edge of each wing. Other than a single runner missing on the outside edge of the cockpit, it remains in near-pristine condition. This miniature was used throughout the series.

This is the first time that either a Viper or Cylon Raider miniature has ever been offered at public auction, and may be the only opportunity a collector might ever have to acquire one of these rare filming miniatures. $50,000 - $60,000.

UPDATE: ‘Profiles in History’ is also selling some other cool Galactica items: an original Cylon Centurion costume, a costume made for Adama (but worn by Tigh), a matte painting of the port flight pod, and most interestingly a “Model T” viper.

Battlestar Galactica novel in the works

Fake BSG novel

Peter David, a fiction writer with a huge following for his novels set in the Star Trek universe, has just announced he’s working on an official Battlestar Galactica novel:

So it’s definite, I’ll be doing a “Battlestar Galactica” novel (I say it’s definite because I got the contract in the mail.)

I figure I must be on the right beam because two of the story elements I wanted to explore were nixed by the BG folks on the basis that it’s stuff they’re planning to explore in season 3.

Judging from the Wikipedia entry on Peter David, BSG fans have a lot to be excited about! David has written scores of Star Trek novels, two episodes of Babylon 5, an episode of Crusade, and long runs of the Spider Man and Incredible Hulk comics. And that’s just the more well-known stuff.

(And, yes, the book cover is a fake. Just having a little fun with this story.)

UPDATE: there’s also a miniseries novelization written by Jeffrey Carver that’s planned for release in hard cover form on Dec 27, 2005. A paperback version will follow in Feb 2006.

Where can I purchase a Battlestar Fleet uniform?

October 13, 2005 at 9:06 am | Merchandise

Christopher Aillon is asking a very good question in his latest blog entry:

Dear Ron Moore, et. al:

Where can I purchase a Battlestar Fleet uniform? So far, I have been unsuccessful in tracking down said apparel. Rank doesn’t matter much, however Commander would be preferable. I know you don’t have to prove you are totally bad ass or anything, since your show is pretty frakking sweet, but it would make for an awesome story and a pretty fun and memorable Halloween and keep my mind off the fact that I have to wait for a few more months to see the rest of season 2 — gah, pure evil. How the hell do you sleep at night!? Anyway, if you could let me know, that would be awesome. So say we all.

I bet more than a few Galactica fans would like to know the answer! (Especially since we’re just a few weeks away from Halloween.)

Battlestar Galactica — The Card Game!

August 22, 2005 at 9:00 am | Merchandise

WizKids Games, the makers of several collectible games including Pirates and Rocketmen, have announced plans to create a collectible card game for Battlestar Galactica:

WizKids Inc., creator of the runaway hit games HeroClix® and Pirates of the Spanish Main™, announced today its agreement with Universal Studios Consumer Products Group to develop a collectable card game (CCG) based on the new SCI FI Channel Battlestar Galactica series.

“We couldn’t be happier to add our tradition of innovative gaming to one of the hottest science fiction properties available,” said Mike Samora, vice president of Sales and Marketing at WizKids®. “The success of the television show has introduced a new generation to the Battlestar Galactica story, and a game is the natural expansion of that introduction.” The game, slated for release in early 2006, features characters, ships and familiar scenes from the miniseries and television show on the SCI FI Channel.

Game play will mirror the intrigue of the television show: Players won’t know whom to trust, who the Cylon agents are or where the next attack will come from! Players will battle for ownership of resources and influence in order to control the fleet.
